It was already rumored that Twitter (now known as X) would be paid , or at least a new subscription system would be introduced. However, we did not have exact information. As a matter of fact , Elon Musk made a statement about the issue in the post he shared on X this morning. So what will the Twitter (X) advertising subscription system be like?
What did Musk say about subscription with X ads?
Elon Musk said today that social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, will soon launch two new premium subscription tiers. In a post on X, Musk said: “One is lower cost with all the features, but with ads. The other one is more expensive, but there is no advertising.”
Musk, who took over the platform in October 2022, is trying to increase revenue by charging users and attracting advertisers who stopped buying ads after he fired employees and disbanded content moderation teams. Musk acknowledged that the platform was taking a hit on revenue and accused activists of pressuring advertisers.
While it didn’t provide further details about its subscription plans, a test run by X earlier this week suggested several restrictions for users who don’t want to pay for the service. X began charging new users in New Zealand and the Philippines $1 to access the platform as a test case.
The company’s website stated that new users who choose to subscribe will be able to perform “read-only” operations such as reading posts, watching videos and following accounts without paying any money. It is believed that Musk’s move is aimed at ending bot accounts on the platform.
To generate revenue, Musk began charging $8 a month for his blue tick subscription service and offered discounts to companies for advertising on the platform. But advertisers did not want their ads to appear next to inappropriate content as the company faced criticism for lax content moderation.
